Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 Multiplayer Review -PS4
8Overall Score
Graphics 10
Weapons 8
Matchmaking 5.5
Movement 8

At the time of writing this, I am officially Prestige 3 Level 15 and I got approximately 30+ hours put into the multiplayer segment of the game.

Call of Duty series suffered a great blow with the multiplayer of Ghosts and Advanced Warfare. A lot of professionals and YouTubers stuck to the “old is gold” Black Ops 2. Ghosts tried to alter the pathway paved by its predecessors whereas in Advanced Warfare, Sledgehammer decided to screw the pathway and took to the skies. (Exo Pun Intended)

With the arrival of Black Ops 3, Treyarch decided to return to its roots which made Black Ops 2 great but with added innovation which made the game feel new. Let’s dive in and see how good or bad the multiplayer of Black Ops 3 actually is.

Unfair Comparison?

Ever since Treyarch revealed the multiplayer trailer and showed off the new movement system which involved all the different thrusting and wall running capabilities, people have been comparing it to Titanfall. Before we go on any further, I must declare one thing. This is not fair for both the games. Apart of being FPS, they are nothing alike. So, for an unbiased and a fair review, let’s actually review the game without saying that it’s a total rip-off, ok? Moving on.

Weapon Balancing…The Holy Grail of Call of Duty.

Ever since I have played Call of Duty, I have heard people complain about how unbalanced the guns are. If you don’t know what weapon balancing means, to put it simply, it means how fair the gun fights in the game actually are.

Black Ops 3 has done us all a huge favor by removing weapon variants. Yes, the same ugly kind added in Advanced Warfare. That particular addition promoted unbalanced and unfair games. If an entire team on one side had powerful variants, your team will automatically be screwed.Black Ops 3The guns are Black Ops 3 are very well balanced. Every single you pick in the game is good at something. It’s not like a single gun can outclass every other gun in the entire game. The ARs, SMGs, LMGs, Snipers and even the secondaries are all very well balanced. Only one weapon which is the Argus, a lever action shotgun, or what I like to call, a lever action sniper. Its stupid how long the range is on this gun for a shotgun. They might nerf it in the future because it is becoming kind of mainstream. Let’s hope that they do.

Other than that, the elements of balanced guns results in more fun gunfights where there is actually a reason as to why you lost/won that gunfight.

The Maps

The maps in Black Ops 3 are all very well designed. Here is a list of of all the maps in Black Ops 3

  • Nuk3town: Bonus Map available only on PS4, Xbox One, and PC (bonus map not available on PS3 or Xbox 360). Set in the year 2065, players will experience a fresh take on this classic run-and-gun, close-quarters multiplayer map. Watch the trailer here.
  • Combine
  • Stronghold
  • Hunted
  • Evac
  • Redwood
  • Aquarium
  • Breach
  • Exodus
  • Fringe
  • Havoc
  • Infection
  • Metro

The strange thing you will notice in almost every map is as if they are not designed to cater for the new movement system. Although it’s not a bad thing but it still feels out of place.

Black Ops 3Don’t get me wrong, though. There are plenty of wall-run spots and other things in the maps that, once you get the hang of the movement system, will guarantee you an edge over the others.

The Specialist are fun

Treyarch’s bold move of adding Specialists, each with their unique weapon and ability, add a whole another dimension. Result? They are a lot of FUN!

The bad-ass in the above picture is my favorite specialist, Spectre. His specialist weapon is the Ripper, the twin-blade coming out his hand like Wolverine, and his specialist ability is Active Camo, which makes him invisible for a short time. You can choose either one before the start of any match. You can’t switch during a match though if you’re wondering.Black Ops 3Goodbye to Skill-Based Matchmaking

Yes, that’s right. There is no more SBMM. For people where the amount of CoD of players or even PS4/XB1 owners is small, you are going to have a lot of trouble finding a match. I have experienced sitting and waiting for long times until I found a match because somehow, the game does NOT expand its search circle. It keeps on searching in just a very close proximity.

This is an extremely bad thing for me, being from Pakistan where the amount of players are limited. The workaround for that is to befriend someone who lives in UK or EU. You’ll get 2-3 bars ping there and you’ll easily find lobbies in their party. Honestly, that is how I hit Prestige 2.

From Day One, Black Ops 3 faced a lot of issues regarding their servers and matchmaking. Although, they consider it “fixed”, atleast you could find a match in Advanced Warfare. Still the game is in its early stages and let’s all hope these kinks gets fixed properly.

Call of Duty Black Ops III adds a whole new dimension following the “trail we blaze” strategy. They preserved a lot of elements that made Black Ops II a massive hit while adding a new innovation that attracts new players and offers a fresh feel to the entire experience.
